Oh yes, music... The lecture last week was very helpful. The main thing that stuck out was: if I'm putting in hundreds of hours of work on this project, I don't want the sound to let it down.
My ambition was to create the music for this film myself. However, I'm not so sure that I could pull it off and match the quality of the visuals. I have 10 years of classical training in piano and some music arranging knowledge but I haven't actually composed anything before. Maybe it's not the best time to start for this film...
Having said that, I do want quite a bit of influence on the music. What I'll do is to add commercial music to my finished animatic so as to get an idea of what music works well with the film. That way, I know what kind of style I'm looking for. When that's done I will contact the Music Faculty students for SUPPORT in composing the soundtrack. Maybe I can come up with the main musical themes and the music student can come up with the arranging of the piece as well as the conducting of the musicians.
At this point I am thinking a blend of electronic and acoustic instruments to emphasize the conflict between nature and man-made garbage.

rubbish bin on beachside pathway – ext. morning
An overflowing rubbish bin. We hear a voice coming from the bin.
voice
… (speech)
There are all types of plastic objects in the bin, brushes, cameras, straws, chip bags, headphones. Some are looking nervous, others anxious and excited, while others look confused.
We have a closer look at Coco, a soft drink bottle, and Mac, a coffee cup.
coco
This is ridiculous. I say we stay put.
mac
Are you crazy? A million years in a landfill, no thanks!
leader
(speech)
A garbage truck is heard in the distance.
coco
But who knows if it even exists?
mac
Everyone’s heading there, of course it exists.
The garbage truck is heard again, a little closer.
coco
Surely we still have a purpose here? You just want to throw it all away?
mac
Hello!! We’ve been thrown away!
A whistle blows. All the objects escape from the rubbish bin.
mac
It’s the shredder or the dump back here, kid. You make your choice!
Mac jumps off the bin. Coco looks out to him.
coco
MAC!!! YOU’LL NEVER MAKE IT! THERE IS NO PLASTIC CITY!!
The garbage truck is heard coming to a halt. Coco turns to look at the garbage truck. Its arm is approaching the bin.
Coco looks back towards the beach. He looks again at the approaching arm… and back towards the beach.
Coco jumps off the bin and tumbles down the steps.
the beach – soft sand - ext cont.
Coco is running in pursuit of Mac. All the other objects are running towards the sea.
coco
MAC!!! MAC!!!
Plastic objects are being picked up by the Green Army and their garbage pickers, smashing into the sand like mortar.
Coco is lucky to dodge most of the pickers. He finds a sand castle and tries to hide from view. He keeps yelling out Mac’s name but can’t spot him.
Suddenly, one of the towers explodes behind him. A picker is targeting him. Coco must run for his life with the picker in pursuit. There is a ditch in the sand and Coco jumps in, narrowly avoiding the picker.

mac
It’s good to see you got some sense into you!
Mac is lying low in the ditch, amongst some other plastic objects.
coco
You’re right, Mac. With all of us going there. If it doesn’t exist, we’ll just have to build it won’t we?
There is still a lot of action happening just beside them. Suddenly, Coco sees that the water is very close.
coco
The water! We’re there!
Coco and Mac jump out of the ditch, followed by other objects.
the beach - wet sand
It’s is the last stretch before the water and there are still a few plastic objects going towards it.
Shadows darken the landscape. Up above there is a squadron of seagulls in attack formation.
The seagulls, one by one, leave the formation and dive towards Coco, Mac, and the other objects. The brightest ones, as well as the ones that smell of food get taken.
Mac is unlucky and is plucked by one of the seagulls.

NOOOO!!!! MAC!!!!
Coco is devastated, frightened, and panicked. He just keeps running towards the waves.
The sound of waves gets stronger. The screen is covered by water.
FADE OUT:
underwater montage – later
Coco and various other objects are moving with the current.
Dark.
They join a bigger stream of moving plastic objects.
Dark.
The stream of objects arrives to a huge cloud of objects and flakes of all the colors imaginable. It is Plastic City, and it truly is a magnificent site.
Coco reunites with Mac. They smile at each other and keep heading towards the middle of Plastic City.
